General and Department Stores

There are the usual large chain type stores along the Northway till Lake George in the usual suburban shopping areas, usually somewhere on US 9. But the farther you get into the park past Lake George, most of the places are smaller locally owned and operated places. But in the heart of the Adirondacks you can still find the quintessential general store, often the only store in the hamlet. You can find groceries, food to go, gas, kero, hardware, tools, videos, clothes, camping supplies, guns and ammo, bait & tackle and the various sundries of woods life. They often have a dinette bar and are the heartbeat of their northwoods community. Unfortunately, their numbers are dwindling. On other places, there are five and dime or department stores that were popular throughout America until the suburban boom of the fifties and sixties. These don't have the bewildering variety of the general store, but are the place to get clothes, gifts, small appliances, toys and other vacation goods. You'll find these in the larger villages and towns.
